Gosau, one of those rare places which have best of all the worlds. It is a small scenic village in the lap of mountains, surrounded by lakes and it is still far from the malice of over commercialization.
Understand the Geography
Salzkammergut is an area near Salzburg known for its picturesque Alpine ranges and an infinite number of lakes, also popularly knows as Lakes Capital of Austria. Dachstein Salzkammergut, in the southern part of Salzkammergut, is one of the most popular regions among travelers due to one small village called Hallstatt.
This article is about another not very popular pearl of this necklace, called Gosau which is 15 km west of Hallstatt.
Story of discovering Gosau
In our quest of exploring some lesser known destinations of Europe for our 90 days long Eurotrip, we decided to ditch Vienna and Salzburg and hit the Austrian Alps. I heard about Hallstatt from a friend but it turned out to be super expensive for accommodation and out of our budget (200-300 euros per night). A search for a cheaper accommodation near Hallstatt took us to Gosau, which later turned out to be such an amazing place that we actually visited Hallstatt for just a few hours in 4 days.
Road trip to Gosau
You can take a bus to reach Gosau but you will need to take a car rental to explore the place. We took a car rental from Linz and kicked started our amazing road trip to the Alps. Being a proud motorcycle rider, I have never learned how to drive a car but my wife Anu was a savior in this. It was actually a nice experience to just sit in the passenger seat, enjoying the amazing view outside with great music and eating carbs.
Love at first sight
It was literally love at first sight moment with this place. A highway with scenic views on both sides going directly into the mountains and it slowly reveals the magic of one of the most beautiful places that we have witnessed.
Roam around in the village
Someone can easily spend their entire day roaming around in the village and there are endless frames waiting to be clicked. It seemed that we were the only tourists roaming in the village and Gosau welcomed us with open arms.
You can find multiple restaurants and a grocery place around 5 km outside the village but there was only one restaurant (a pizzeria) in the village which was luckily at a walking distance from our stay. We had pizza 2 nights in a row with different toppings and beer combination. Pizza was actually the safest option especially for vegetarians, to try out of all other random dishes which we also tried on our last day.
It was not very cold in the first week of June, a normal jacket in the evening will work, but rain was very unpredictable. Carrying an umbrella or raincoat is not a bad idea if you are out for a walk.
We stayed at a guesthouse, Gastehaus Wallmann, owned by a very cute and helpful granny. We had to put some efforts in communication as she didn’t understand English but she was very helpful and also provided free breakfast with stay. Along with a wonderful host, the guesthouse has an amazing location with mesmerizing view on both sides.
We are just done with 1 day in Gosau and there is lot more to see. In our next section, we will take you to some authentic local cuisines and explore lakes around Gosau which are a perfect spot to just sit for hours and admire the nature’s beauty or put on your hiking shoes for nature’s walk. Here is a glimpse of nature’s beauty from the most famous lake in Gosau.
