Gosau, Deep in Austrian Alps – II (Explore Lakes)

The lake and the mountains have become my landscape, my real world ~Georges Simenon“, this completely holds true for me and surely for most nature lovers. I can sit beside a lake and stare at different reflections for hours but when you are in a place like Gosau, the experience of solitude and peace is at a different level.

Gosau, being an exceptional destination has 4 such lakes to offer. Each lake has its own charm and difficulty level to reach, starting with no efforts at all to hours of hiking. You are all free to select one which suits your travel style or visit all of them.

Vorderer, Gosaulacke, Hinterer

I would name these as “three sister lakes” as they are in one straight line. Vorderer is very convenient to reach as you will get to park your car right in front of the lake but you will have to burn some calories to reach the other two lakes. Locals consider only two lakes out of three as Gosaulacke is usually dried up and very small as compare to Vorderer and Hinterer.

Vorderer is the most commercial out of all lakes in Gosau and by commercial, I mean just one restaurant and two souvenir shops.

Love to do nothing

Vorderer is a perfect stop to take a break from all your problems and do nothing. The view is so mesmerizing that you can stare at it forever and especially if you are one of those who only need a drink and a good view for a holiday, you will find yourself at the right place.

Put on the hiking shoes

As a couple, we are a combo of a lazy guy and an over-enthusiastic girl. We spent hours at the lakeshore appreciating the nature’s magic and also went for a long hike from Volderer lake.

Hike from Volderer to Hinterer lake

It was little tough according to our standards, it took us 2.5 hrs to reach Hinterer lake, passing through uneven jungle track with mini waterfalls and crazy sounds.

Hike around the Volderer lake

We took the other side route while returning from Hinterer. We got a nice waterfall and some great reflection shots while returning. If someone wants to hike around the lake, it can easily take 1.5 hr to 2 hr depending on breaks.

Lockernmoos Lake

You have to put some efforts to reach this as it is only accessible by 2.5 hr hike. There are several starting points for this hike, you can ask any local for the directions. We couldn’t visit this lake but it is highly recommended to go in the morning to experience something exceptional.

Treat for taste buds

There is this amazing restaurant/guesthouse right in front of the lake where everything is great from delicious food and desserts to very nice service and helpful staff.

We tried this amazing drink named Lumumba (hot chocolate with rum), which is quite common in mountains and is a nice twist in our favorite hot chocolate.

I can’t describe which one is the major highlight of Gosau; whether it is the scenic beauty of the village or its amazing lakes or a trip to the top of the mountains which we will cover in our next post. Maybe, we will just let the readers decide after our third segment of “Explore Gosau”. Next, we will take a cable car to go up to the top of the mountain, Zwieselalm. Here is one highlight from the next section.
