Travel guide to Flores Azores – Part II

Scenic highway ER2-2 in Flores by Travel Anubhav.

It is our second day to explore one of the most scenic islands in the world. Flores, one of the nine islands of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean near Portugal. Today, we decided to explore the northern coast of the island which leads to some scenic viewpoints, a great drive and a lighthouse as the final destination. Checkout Day1 of our trip to Flores.

One of the most scenic airports

We started our day on ER1-2 highway driving towards the north. I had to resist my temptation to stop the car at every turn which leads to some amazing views of the coast but I couldn’t do that to click one of the most scenic airports which we have seen so far and luckily there was an airplane on the runway as a perfect subject.

Ride along the northern coast

The major highlight of the day was to drive along the northern coast and stop the car for every great view (please keep the security in mind and don’t stop at blind turns). There are multiple designated viewpoints as well with a parking space offroad.

Miradouro dos Cedros

“Miradouro” means viewpoint in Portuguese language, so slow down whenever you see a signboard with this. You will see a signboard for this viewpoint and it offers an amazing view of the coast with rocks in the front and you can see the Corvo island in the background. We visited Corvo island for one night via an adventurous ferry route. Check out details here.

The Ponta do Albernaz Lighthouse

This is our last destination and the top northern point of the island. The Portuguese version is Farol da Ponta do Albernaz and it’s a nice ride to reach at the end of the island.

Aldeia da Cuada – Turismo de Aldeia

An abandoned village converted into an amazing tourist accommodation where you will get to stay in the stone houses surrounded by scenic views of the island. This place is very close to Faja Grande but we thought to cover the next day as our Day1 was jampacked with a lot of other activities. Check out Day 1 in Flores here. You can book your accommodation here as well if comes under your budget or drop by for a coffee/snacks at their restaurant which is open to all.

Rocha dos Bordões

This place is one of its kind and an open display of nature’s art when erosion over years converted the rock into long prismatic columns.

Road to Infinity

While heading back to our accommodation in Flores we took the highway ER2-2 and realized that it’s not just the destinations but highways are also scenic in Flores, another reason to fall in love with this place again and again.

And then we said bye to Flores with this last picture of ours on the island. This is definitely one of the most scenic and remote places we have ever been. There are very few places where you can set up a tripod in the middle of the main highway and able to click a picture (take precautionary measures before attempting such a shot).
